The Silk Road

The Silk Road was a network of trade routes spread over the regions of the Asian continent from china to Eastern Europe. It connects the northern border of china, India and Persia and ended up in Eastern Europe near Mediterranean Sea


The Chinese Silk was carried out through these trade routes from the time of Han dynasty (207 BCE-220 CE). The quality of Chinese Silk was excellent, it was known for its softness and luxury, because of this quality people from Asia and Europe used to buy it at high prices.

Trade on the Silk Road played a significant role in the development of the civilizations of China, the subcontinent, Persia, Europe the horn of Africa & Arabia. Trade relations via the Silk Road acted as economic & political contact between these civilizations. It also established cultural relations. However Silk Road helped spread many diseases, most notably plague among the peoples along its length.

Silk Road though derives its name from the trade in Chinese silk, it dealt in many other items like tea, salt, sugar porcelain and spices. Chinese imported certain goods like cotton, ivory, wool, gold & silver. Chinese was very much concerned about the safety of their trade products and extended Great Wall of China to ensure the protection of the trade route.


In June 2014, UNESCO declared the Chang'an-Tianshan corridor of the Silk Road as a world heritage site.
